How can you wrap up the old year and welcome the new one with wonderful traditions?
I recently asked myself what I was really doing and what I had achieved this year. For some reason I feel like it has flown by me at the speed of sound and I’ve accomplished almost nothing or that I could have done so much more.
Do you know that feeling?
I don’t even know exactly what I’ve achieved, but I’m sure I’ve achieved a lot.
I have decided to end this year more consciously and put everything in writing once again.
What were the ups and downs that I experienced?
Who has come into my life?
What knowledge did I gain?
What has been wonderful?
Then it’s about my desires and goals for the coming year.
It is to this conscious new start that I want to inspire you.
If you haven’t been interested in customs, spirituality and a little bit of superstition before, this may seem a little strange to you.
Nevertheless, I want to encourage you to just dig in and give it a try.
We’re talking about Christmas Eve.
Have you heard of it before?
They traditionally begin on Christmas Eve at midnight and end on 5 January, also with the chime of 6 January.
There are many wonderful German legends about the 12 ritual nights and some of the rituals associated with them.
I’ve chosen the ones that are realistic to embody and in doing so you will feel beautiful and aware.
“Before the Christmas season begins, write 13 wishes on small pieces of paper. Think carefully: what is important to you? What excites you? What would make the coming year perfect?
Fold the 13 pieces of paper so that they no longer differ on the outside. Put them in a bag or a box.
Every Christmas Eve, if possible, in the dark or at least at dusk, go outside and take one of the sheets of paper out of the bag or box. In this way, you give your wish to the spiritual world by burning it (in a fireproof bowl) – without looking at what kind of wish it is, which the higher powers will now take care of. Watch as the paper begins to smoke. Be still and watch what happens in your head or heart.
Put the ashes to the ground and finish by thanking the elements for their support. Do this twelve times.
On 6 January you will have the last piece of paper in your sack or box. Solemnly take it out and unfold the paper. Then read the wish you will have to take care of yourself in the coming year to make it come true.”
(From “Vom Zauber der Rauhnächte”)
I have been performing this ritual for the past two years and have enjoyed it every time.
It was my brief moment to reflect on myself and rest. Just me and my wish for the coming year.
If all this is too long for you because you don’t have time, you can do the following ‘Mini Ritual’:
Light a candle every day. Sit in front of it and look at it.
Take a deep and calm breath in and out twelve times, counting the twelve months in your mind. One breath for each month. After December, close your eyes for a minute or two and mentally address yourself while continuing to breathe evenly.
Then look again at the candle and, breathing again, count down the months to the one which corresponds to today’s Christmas Eve. Feel the light from outside reflecting inside you.
Feel the light of your life in your chest, in your heart.
Concentrate on this while you finish the little ritual and blow out the candle in front of you.
In the following table you will find a list of Christmas Eve nights, which month they are responsible for, and tips for the main theme of the day and month:

WINTER SOLSTICE
21 December – a cosmic beginning
For many people, it is already on this day that Christmas Eve nights actually begin. The extraordinary position of the sun on this day has always been appreciated, and to this day many people still perform a fire ritual on this day.
It is the shortest day of the year, the sun “makes a turn” and from tomorrow it will be visible a little longer.
It is the darkest day and at the same time a symbol of the rebirth of light.
This makes it the perfect introduction to Christmas Eve nights.
The first opportunity to set the mood, and form your own tradition for yourself, such as sitting by candlelight in silence for a few minutes.
This day will also be an excellent opportunity to sort out your personal aspirations and prepare the ritual described above: choose desires from your head and heart, write them on small pieces of paper and put them in a vessel.
You will see: these wishes will immediately begin to work for you.
From 25 December, you will take out a piece of paper every day and burn it – and eventually you will know what to do for yourself.
6 JANUARY – START OF THE YEAR
At midnight we open the windows and welcome the new, fresh year!
However the day goes for you: as of today, everything will be brighter and we will start the new year with renewed vigour.
Today you will open the 13th piece of paper and find out what you need to do for yourself this year.
I will tell you more about the Yuletide season in this podcast episode.
In it, you will learn in detail about the customs and rituals of the Yuletide days.
They allowed us to end the last year wonderfully and start a new one
I want to invite you to choose a ritual or custom for yourself and try it out.
Believe me, the end of the year will be great if you consciously say goodbye to it. You will plunge into the new year with more motivation if you set new goals and desires for yourself.
Wishing you lots of fun and a magical time at Christmas time!
