Many people’s happiness depends mainly on external factors. Outwardly, everything has to be perfect so that we think we are happy and content. If the state of happiness does not come, we further compensate for it with external factors.
If you are caught in this vicious circle, we have a small but effective tip for you: meditation. This is the ability to regularly focus on one thing with all your senses to shut down the chaos of your thoughts and make you truly happy through balance and tranquillity.
What does meditation mean?
Meditation is not about becoming a different or even a better person. Rather, it’s about improving your perception and getting a healthy posture. It’s about looking at your thoughts and feelings without judgement and thereby learning to understand them better. Give yourself a moment of mindfulness every day!
It’s about training, not perfection
Like exercising your muscles, meditation is about developing habits and implementing them. Developing a meditation practice doesn’t necessarily mean doing a long ceremony every day. Find something that energises and strengthens you. Perhaps you can find a partner to practice with.
Don’t be angry if your focus shifts and your thoughts wander. This is normal and part of your experience. The only important thing: Keep practising! Your focus is the way to go.
Benefits of regular meditation
You experience less stress
Concentration, attention and focus on the goal is improved
Creativity is stimulated
Improves physical perception
Warms up your mind
Emotional stability
Empathy is strengthened
And here’s a little guide for your 5-minute break during the day that you can really use anywhere.
Instructions for a 5-minute meditation:
Sit on a chair and bring your back to a straight upright position.
(Of course, you can also lie down).
Put your feet flat under your knees and your legs at a right angle.
Place your hands on your hips and relax your arms.
Close your eyes.
Take a deep breath and concentrate on feeling your own feet. How are they touching the floor, the fabric of your stockings, your shoes? Don’t think about your feet, feel them.
After a few breaths, your attention will move up from your feet to the next parts of your body. From your ankles, to your shins, to your knees, to your hips, until finally you reach your shoulders, neck, head.
Scan each part of your body, take a few breaths, release all tension and move on.
Once you reach your head, try to extend this ‘feeling of attention’ to your whole body.
It’s okay if other thoughts are bothering you. Don’t get angry, just push your thoughts away like a cloud and focus again. Bring your attention back to yourself and your body.
Try to sit for five minutes – even if you get distracted. You’ve done a great job and had a great time. Next time it will be much easier!
The more often you take this short break and practise, the easier it will be for you to concentrate. After about a month, you will get into this new habit and the results will be noticeable. Try to increase the length of each session if you enjoy it.
