Have you ever had to throw away (fresh) foods because they are rotten, soft or just plain brown? Did you know that if you store them properly, food can stay fresh for 2-6 days longer?
There are several tricks that can extend their lifespan, especially with fresh fruit and vegetables.
This is what it looks like with vegetables:
Aubergines, peas, mushrooms and asparagus keep well in the refrigerator in the vegetable compartment. Brown spots may appear from the cold, but this too can be prevented by simply placing them on a cloth napkin.
WARNING: Do not wrap mushrooms in foil; asparagus will last longer if wrapped in a damp cloth.
Tomatoes, peppers and courgettes, on the other hand, are sensitive to cold and should be stored separately.
As a general rule, vegetables should be kept separate from fruit and protected from light, and herbs should be trimmed.
But it is better to do the same with FRUITS:
Apples, bananas and mangoes should not be kept in the refrigerator as they can develop brown spots. Apricots and peaches must also not (!) be washed before storage.
Berries should be covered before storing in the fridge.
By the way, bananas should NEVER be kept in the fridge – they absorb all odours and will only turn brown quicker.
Are you starting to dismantle the contents of the fridge or are you already a pro?
